Attackers in 2017 stole more than $ 300 million as a result of cyberattacks on the ICO (Initial Coin Offering – a form of attracting investment in the form of selling new crypto currency), said the chief anti-virus expert of Kaspersky Lab, Alexander Gostev.
In 2017, according to the company, around 3.5 billion dollars were raised in the world during the ICO. “About $ 300 million of them were stolen anyway,” Gostev said at a press conference. At the same time, the number of victims of such robbery, according to him, exceeded 60 thousand people.
Intruders in their activities resorted to different methods. The company this year, in particular, recorded about 2 thousand phishing attacks on the ongoing ICO.
Kaspersky Lab’s experts observed both classical phishing schemes of deceiving potential investors and frankly counterfeit projects, the purpose of which was to simply collect money without further implementation of an idea, Gostev also pointed out.
He gave an example when one of the Israeli start-ups suffered. Their site for the ICO was hacked, the attacker changed the address and earned $ 7 million a few hours before the problem was discovered.
In the next year, according to the company’s forecasts, attacks on crypto-currencies will continue, and, judging by her expectations, the attackers will progress. “The most interesting is that we will see a shift in this area as well. In addition to traditional attacks on the crypto currency itself, attacks on virtual values in the blockchain will begin (applications, platforms, games based on this technology – Ed.), ” – the expert concluded.
