Government Employees in Ukraine Secretly Mined Cryptocurrency for 4 Months

Government employees at a regional police headquarters in Ukraine were caught mining cryptocurrencies using a mining rig that was cleverly set up in the office of the Communications Department. The mining rig, which was concealed between two wooden boards, comprised of 8 graphics cards, 2 hard drives, 6 power units, a motherboard and a full computer unit.

Investigators did not disclose which cryptocurrency was mined nor have they calculated how much power was consumed over the 4 month period but, authorities are intending to charge the employees with ‘theft of electricity’.

To date, cryptocurrency mining is not illegal in Ukraine and though the country does not have a regulatory framework the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine has suggested that a bill for cryptocurrency regulation should be considered.
